Viruses and malware can cause your computer to slow down, destroy or corrupt files, and send personal information to third parties. These programs can also cause networks to crash or become unstable. If you wish to connect your laptop to the Columbus School of Law networks, wired or wireless, you are required to have an up to date antivirus software.
Antivirus software can be found at any electronics retailer, online and also in the CUA bookstore. Before you purchase, you should check with your internet service provider to see if they provide free antivirus software free with your service.
It is easy to decrease your chances of contracting a computer virus:
- Install an antivirus program and keep it up to date
- Do not install free programs off of the internet
- Keep your computer patched via Microsoft updates http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
- Do not run unsigned ActiveX scripts or ones from unknown Web sites
- Do not install free toolbars, etc from Web sites
- Only visit Web sites you know to be safe
- Do no participate in peer-to-peer file sharing
If you have a virus:
- Update and run your antivirus software to try to remove it
- Use Microsoft's free virus removal program at http://safety.live.com.
- Bring your laptop to Computer Services
