Founded more than 25 years ago, the Institute for Communications Law Studies is devoted to the specialized training of select students in a diverse body of law that affects perhaps the most powerful tools ever devised by human beings:  mass communication and media.  It offers more courses in communications law than any other American law school and provides invaluable externships found only in the Washington, D.C., area.  The institute prepares students for practice with communications law firms, government agencies, industry trade associations, U.S. Congress, media and public interest organizations, as well as private communications companies.

Preparation for real-life practice includes the opportunity to develop oral argument skills at the Federal Communications Bar Association's National Telecommunications Moot Court Competition, held annually at Catholic University's law school.  Beyond familiarity with the technical points of communications law, and in step with the university's commitment to fostering servant leadership for the Church, the nation and the world, students are encouraged to think critically about the broader impact that mass media and advances in technology have upon society and human behavior.

Whether an independent television station is up for sale to a big media conglomerate, an international communications company is establishing telephone service with a local provider in Venezuela, or a new start-up is launching an Internet radio station, such transactions require expert communications attorneys.  The goal of the Institute for Communications Law Studies is to develop these professionals.

Students who successfully complete the Institute requirements receive, in addition to the J.D. degree, a certificate attesting to their completion of the specialized educational program.

Class of 2007 CLI Graduates pose with director, Dave Irwin.
