Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project: Founded at The Cardozo School of Law in 1992 by Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld, the Innocence Project seeks to exonerate the wrongly convicted, primarily through the use of DNA evidence. DNA evidence has been used as scientific proof that our criminal justice system convicts and sentences innocent people. Unfortunately, wrongful convictions are not rare or even isolated events. The Catholic University of America Chapter of the Innocence Project was founded in 2002. Members are typically assigned a case in which they must determine if an actual innocence claim exists. Working closely with supervising attorneys, student members investigate facts, review trial transcripts and pleadings, and eventually formulate legal arguments which asserts a client’s factual innocence. The group meets regularly with a faculty advisor to evaluate the progress of cases and to discuss strategies in proving innocence. Members not only gain valuable legal experience and training, but they also apply their legal education to a truly noble and rewarding cause. |
