CUA Law Student and Staff Co-Author Article for Leading Publication

3L Alison Shea and Stephen Young, reference librarian for the Kathryn J. Dufour Law Library, have teamed up as co-authors of an article that will be published in the summer 2007 edition of Law Library Journal, the official publication of the American Association of Law Libraries since 1908. The issue is due out in August.

Shea is graduating from Catholic University in May with a joint degree in law and library science. Last fall, she and Young joined forces to produce "Separating State from Church: A Research Guide to the Law of the Vatican City State," a scholarly essay that according to its abstract “provides an overview of the founding documents and the constitutional structure of the world’s smallest sovereign nation, a discussion of the complex nature of the Vatican’s international status, and a bibliographic essay covering the materials most likely to be available in law libraries in the United States.”  The authors were informed of the journal’s intention to publish their article last week.

"The Vatican City State presents a unique and difficult challenge to the legal researcher," said Young.   The inexorable intertwining of the Church with the State serves to obfuscate the necessary jurisdictional boundaries that exist between these two entities."

“I am tremendously proud of this accomplishment,” said Shea. “I believe that CUA law is a wonderful school for many reasons, including the fact that we offer so many joint degree programs.”

In addition to their collaboration on the Vatican City article, Shea credits Young as someone who has “encouraged my participation in the profession as well as presented good connections for job opportunities.”
