3L Lisa Franchini has raised approximately $20,000 during her law school career to help fund the Loan Repayment Assistance Program.

Used Textbooks Open New Possibilities

Older textbooks are breathing new life into the choices available to CUA law students, thanks to Lisa Franchini (3L).

Since 2005, she has set up a table in the law school cafeteria at the start of each semester to sell donated, used textbooks and study guides to fellow students. All of the money raised goes directly to the Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP), a special fund set up to help pay down the debt burden of law students who choose to go into lower-paying public service jobs after they graduate.

It is truly a win-win situation for all concerned. Upper-class students find a worthy destination for textbooks they no longer need. 1Ls and 2Ls are able to purchase books that are still acceptable for their curriculums at 40 to 50 percent off of the publisher’s price. Best of all, students who are drawn to public service after law school can do so knowing that the financial pressure to pay off big law school loans is slightly eased by LRAP grants.

“They [book donors] get nothing back for it, except for the good feeling of helping LRAP,” says Franchini.

That seems to be enough. Donations have come pouring in each semester that Franchini has set up the table, including some from professors.

There is no shortage of buyers, either. Two years ago, the LRAP book sale raised $3,000 for the program. Last year, it brought in five times that amount. Franchini won’t be able to calculate this year’s total until January, but with students typically spending $750 per semester on textbooks, those who take advantage of the LRAP resale can save themselves some serious money.

The used textbook tables will be removed from the cafeteria after Wednesday, Aug. 22, but Franchini says students who want to see what is left can e-mail her or Joan Gibson, (2L), to arrange for a private sale.
