Elizabeth Porter

Visiting Assistant Professor

 

     A former law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elizabeth Porter has served as a litigation associate in the Washington, D.C., office of Jenner & Block LLP since 2003. Her practice focuses on bankruptcy, Indian law and National Bank Act preemption, and represents corporations in contract and copyright disputes.

 

     During her earlier work with Shea & Gardner (Goodwin, Procter LLP), Washington, D. C., Porter helped draft an amicus brief for the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, in a fair housing case about the location of a group home for mentally ill men in the District of Columbia. The firm received an “Outstanding Achievement” award from the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights for its advocacy.

 

     From 2000-2001, Porter served as a law clerk in Billings, Montana, for Hon. Sidney R. Thomas, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

 

     During the early 1990s, she taught at The American School of Warsaw, Poland. There, Porter instructed students in ninth- and tenth-grade English, high school drama, speech, debate and coached the drama team in international competitions.

 

     Professor Porter received her A.B. from Brown University, earned an Ed.M. from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, obtained an M.A. from Columbia University in Slavic Languages & Literatures and earned her J.D. from Columbia University.
